When Are Fillings Used?

There are various reasons fillings are required. They include:

Composite resin dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance and strength of natural teeth. They were first mostly used on the front teeth where a natural appearance was considered most important, but have quite recently been the choice filling compound for treating molar issues as well.

Composite fillings are much easier to repair, reduce tooth sensitivity, require less drilling, and bond much easier to your existing teeth. With composite fillings, there’s less of a chance that cavities will return, and they help reduce the evasiveness of treating cavities and tooth decay.

Treating Cavities and Tooth Decay

Before your treatment begins, we’ll discuss with you all of your options and how we’ll be treating your cavities. In preparation for this discussion we’ll explain the two basic types of dental fillings, namely direct and indirect fillings.

Direct fillings are fillings placed into a prepared cavity in a single visit. We prepare the tooth, place the filling, and adjust it in one appointment

Indirect fillings generally require two or more visits. They include inlays, on-lays, and veneers. They are used when a tooth has too much damage to support a filling but not enough to necessitate a crown

For indirect fillings, we prepare your tooth and makes an impression of the area to be restored during the first visit. We then place a temporary covering over the prepared tooth with the impressions being sent to our dental laboratory. There, the dental restoration is created and during your next appointment, we cement the restoration into the prepared cavity and adjusts it as needed.
